Two-Day Charcoal Burning Course: From Wood to Artisanal Charcoal
Immerse yourself in the traditional craft of charcoal burning in our two-day course set in the heart of our woodland. This hands-on experience will guide you through the entire process, from understanding the history of charcoal making to marketing and selling artisanal charcoal.

Day 1:
Grading Charcoal and Exploring its Uses
We start at 9:00am, learning how to grade charcoal and exploring its various uses beyond the barbecue. Discover how to create artist's charcoal or supply a forge, and learn how to market and sell your artisanal charcoal. Understanding Charcoal, dive straight into the world of charcoal. We'll discuss the history of charcoal making and the types of wood that produce the best charcoal. You'll then get hands-on experience loading the ring kiln, understanding the importance of airflow and how to seal the kiln correctly. As the evening draws in, we'll light the kiln at 4:00pm. If you're camping overnight, you may wish to rise early to assist with the changing of the chimneys - a crucial part of the process.

Day 2: 6am start. Learning the shutdown process and learning to earth up the kiln followed by any further questions and breakfast!

This course is a practical, hands-on experience, so please bring clothes you don't mind getting dirty and sturdy boots. Bring food, we have cooking facilities. You're welcome to camp overnight for the burn, or there are comfortable B&Bs nearby.
