The Island is celebrating its sweet sixteenth this October, joining up with Centrespace studios to celebrate art in the city centre with Open Studios events 11th, 12th and 13th October.
When Artspace Lifespace took on the former Bridewell Police Headquarters building in 2008 with a 6 month licence to occupy they had little idea they’d still be running as an arts centre 16 years later. Over the weekend you can book into an historical tour of the building to discover its long history of detention and corrective activity. Pop your head into the cells and stroll through the high walled exercise yard.
With over 100 artists working from The Island it’s rich pickings for the Studio Holder’s Exhibition opening on Friday 11th, 4 - 7pm. Artists will also have their doors open to view their studios and learn about their creative processes.
On Saturday artists will again open their studio doors, pop into Graft workshop’s studio on the ground floor for some badge making or add your own self-portrait to the portrait gallery. Bring the family along for a Juggling workshop or join in a laughter workshop. There’s the chance to try out free dance and circus taster classes. Some classes need to be booked in advance, some are drop in, see Headfirst for full details.
On Sunday the Studio Holder’s exhibition will be open but the rest of the building will be closed as the team take a well earned rest.
