Spike Island presents Grey Unpleasant Land is a thought-provoking exhibition by artists Sophia Al-Maria and Lydia Ourahmane. Exploring the myth of England as a nation, this collaborative exhibition blends historical artifacts, speculative narratives, and petitions to patrons, offering a critical look at England’s complex cultural and historical landscape. Developed over two years, Al-Maria and Ourahmane, both immigrants to the UK, examine the “grey areas” of England’s narrative, questioning stories of origin and belonging. Through this ambitious project, they invite audiences to reflect on national identity and the enduring impact of Britain’s legacy.
