Ambrosine Allen: In the Course of Ages
In The Course of Ages is a solo exhibition by artist Ambrosine Allen, showcasing a collection of intricate collages that explore the tension and transformation within natural landscapes. Drawing on aesthetic influences from 17th and 18th-century engravings, Allen’s work captures chaotic yet beautiful scenes where seas invade lands, storms gather, and ecosystems reveal their omnipotence.
The collages, constructed from tiny paper fragments sourced from encyclopedias and magazines, highlight the meticulous process of their creation. Using tweezers, Allen layers textures and details to depict the sublime, evoking awe and reverence for nature’s primal power. Her works engage with geological and environmental cycles, portraying an ongoing evolution of the natural world that overshadows human history.
Allen’s practice combines stillness and intuition, allowing her to channel personal memories and universal responses to nature’s grandeur. The resulting collages prompt viewers to reflect on their transient place within the timeline of Earth's enduring ecosystems, offering a reimagined perspective on nature's timelessness and resilience.
